Manchester-Bilbao

BAI, Bizkaiko Antzerki Ikastegia seeks to bring its students closer to the international framework of stage production. To this end, in addition to organising the ACT International Festival of Emerging Scene, it establishes relations with different European schools.

Among them is The ARDEN School of Theatre, part of UCEN Manchester, with which for the second consecutive year we have established a student and teacher exchange programme.

Last December 11th, 10 BA (Hons) Theatre and Performance students and 2 teachers from this school landed in Bilbao to share generational realities, pedagogical contents, artistic procedures and cultural contexts for a week as part of their International Performance module.

We hope to return their visit in the spring and complete this personally, professionally and vitally enriching experience.

Under the vector idea of expression/communication, we developed dynamics in which we focused on the corporalities, the capacities of expression and their communicative potential in order to deepen self-knowledge, strengthen bonds and essentially share objectives.

On the first day of the visit, the Manchester students, together with the BAI students, participated in different games and dynamics. Both activities were aimed at a first contact between the two groups and with speed-dates aimed at reflecting on our realities, capacities and potentialities. The session was guided by Silvia Silumsadisa, Sua Aziza and Itxaso San Juan.

The next day, the students of the Arden School of Theatre presented a short play, in which they showed a clear criticism of the UK system. Using words, gesture and music.

Divided into two sessions, the Manchester students gave a workshop to all BAI students. In the first one they worked on different movement scores and small body choreographies. In addition to encouraging memory and imagination through questions chosen exclusively for this purpose.

In the second, in a more individual and personalised way, they worked on the body using photos and children’s stories to create small shared creations.

On the last day, with the help of Sua Aziza, the Manchester students received a course in body expression, using music and the body. After this, a meeting was held where both groups (Manchester-BAI) expressed how they had lived this experience.

After the morning sessions, the afternoons were given over to historical and cultural walks around Barakaldo and Bilbao, visits to museums, cultural centres and exhibition halls, giving them an insight into the contemporary artistic reality of the Basque Country.

On Wednesday afternoon, we were also able to enjoy “Mierda de ciudad” at the Arriaga Theatre, directed by Olatz Gorrotxategi, who was in charge of coordinating this programme last year.

And to finish, the BAI students organised a little get-together with the Manchester students amidst rain, pintxos and laughter, to wish them a good trip and see them off in style.

“I couldn’t have been more excited and, in fact, I still am. For me it was a totally unique and special occasion that I wanted to make the most of and I’m sad to see it end.”

  • “Ezin izan dut gehiago ilusionatu, eta hala jarraitzen dut. Niretzat aukera paregabea eta berezia zen, ahalik eta gehien estutu nahi izan dudana, eta pena ematen dit amaitzeak. “
  • “Exchanging views has been really cool, I really liked how they brought their proposal for creation.”
  • “Iritziak trukatzea oso zentzugabea izan da, asko gustatu zait sortzeko proposamena ekarri duten bezala. “
  • “It’s cool to see how they work and learn a little bit from it.”
  • “Hau da nola lan egiten duten ikustea eta pixka bat ikastea. “
  • “Learning from other people, cultures and experiences is really rewarding and different.”
  • “Beste pertsona, kultura eta esperientzia batzuengandik ikastea benetan pozgarria eta desberdina da. “
  • “Me encanta hacer este tipo de experiencias.”
  • “I love doing these types of experiences.”
  • “Asko gustatzen zait horrelako esperientziak egitea. “

“Everything we did was very dynamic and very creative. I also think we can keep a lot of exercises to ourselves in case we have a lack of creativity or don’t know how to start putting a story together.”

  • “Egin dugun guztia oso dinamikoa eta oso sortzailea izan da. Era berean, uste dut ariketa asko gorde ditzakegula, sormenik ez dugulako edo ez dakigulako nola hasi istorio bat muntatzen. “

20. urteurrenarekkin irudi aldaketa eman diogu eskolari. Badira 20 urte eskola ireki zenetik eta hori ospatzeko, garbiketa eman diogu. Pasa diren ikuskizunetako eta ACT jaialdiko argazkiak aukeratu eta itxura berria eman diogu arkupeari. Inaugurazioa egingo dugu datorren azaroaren 16an.
